Just came up on Spotify’s “Electronic” radio station: Jolie Coquine : Caravan Palace. Loving this song lots so I search for more and it turns out this is a single and the only thing available by this artist (on Spotify anyway). I’d listen to a whole day’s worth of music in this vein.

Listened the heck out of this album yesterday. I think I made it through the album, front-to-back, three times in one afternoon.

The flashbacks were more than I had bargained for. Still being attacked by random bits of nostalgia today. It’s funny the way some bits of music have such deep triggers in the brain. And the music is usually accidental. I’ve never owned this one and only heard a snippet on some podcast driving in to work.

In an unfortunate power-surge incident, the machine hosting the audio files had its OS borked. The audio files themselves are kosher, fortunately, but the drive hosting the OS now has more bad sectors than Detroit. Bad enough to turn a 40GB drive into a measly 8.5GB of storage. Definitely time to get a new HD. Until then, the music shop is closed…

Listening to M83′s Before the Dawn Heals Us and I am struck by the overpowering evocation of longing and despair the album has. Seriously. I’m sitting here at work and all I want to do is sigh and maybe let loose with inexplicable sobbing. Haven’t felt like this since my at-the-time spouse seemed to be purposefully incinerating our marriage and all I could do was watch. I want to say the music personifies reckless waste for the sake of dystopia. Not so much reckless I guess, because it’s as if there’s a compelling need to bring about destruction just for the sake of destroying something.

Celebrating entropy maybe…

I think this mood has been prevalent lately because the slow-mo incinerating marriage is also finally approaching its terminus. That, and the fan blades gained their fecal coating about this time of year two years ago. The judgment is final on the 9^th and this completes the cycle that began June 18th, 1993. From then on, she becomes no more than any other person I might run across on the street and I am protected from having to clean up anymore of the messes that have been spawned in the past two years. The dissolution has been exceptionally drawn out for reasons beyond my control and for the past two years it has been to my emotional well being what smog is to Los Angeles.

Oddly, we’ve been forced to correspond a bit over the past month and change because she insists on soaking up every last bit of support she technically has coming to her. I’ve changed jobs and this means a change in insurance and the like. So, anyway, a rash of email back and forth. I was somewhat struck by the apology she issued in her last communique but, ultimately, I’ve just got to file it away with everything else. Sometimes a wholesale paper shredding policy is best. At any rate, I have a great thing going with Elz and I’d have to say that I’m better off now than I have been in the past 20 some odd years.

Anyway, M83 reminds me a lot of Sigur Rós which, oddly enough, I listened the heck out of almost two years ago. Time to find me some juju right quick so I can reverse this emotional trainwreck. King Sunny Ade is completely antithetical to depression which is what is called for at the moment.

Another entry in the Millionaire’s Holiday rebroadcast series. This one come from November 20, 2005. The good? There’s music. The bad? There’s no voice over. Or did I get the good/bad mixed up?

At any rate, here’s what I had to say about this broadcast back then:

Gal Friday joins me in studio for the second consecutive week. Many interesting finds are played. Gal Friday runs the board for half an hour or so. Oh, and someone turned off the tuner that was hooked in to my soundcard before we left for the show, so no live podcast. As a supplicatory gift, I did convert most of the raw files to mp3 and created a pseudo podcast for you enjoyment [ Podcast | Direct MP3 Link ]. You get to miss my velvet fog voice and the brilliant weather analysis of Gal Friday, but, on the other hand, you will get to hear the Erotic Aerobics track.

Lambchop	Jack’s Tulips	Hickey	“But we’ve already heard this song,” you whine. As my good friend Ponch would say, “Tough maracas.” It just goes so well here and I really love the pathos of this song.
Liminal Lounge	Pre-Set	Hush	I’ve also played this song once or twice before but I cannot remember when. It subsumes the next track too.
The Neo-Futurists	Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind	The Bed Dance	The Neo-Futurists is an improv theater collective in Chicago who have the longest running late night show going. Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind is a series of ever-changing short vingettes and this album is a collection of past pieces. Good stuff on its own but even better when dropped over the top of some nifty electronica such as done here.
The Beta Band	High Fidelity Soundtrack	Dry the Rain	“Watch as I sell five copies of the Beta Band EP,” says Rob Gordon as this song comes over store-play. I suppose it was the subconscious Chicago connection that pulled this song as an obvious follow to the last piece. Anyway, I love this track even if it is a bit poppy for this show.
The B-52′s	Whammy	Work That Skirt	And now Jack Black’s character’s line about the ultimate disposition of good bands who put out subsequent bad albums line comes to my attention as I try to explain this track’s appearance on this show. Dunno, but it seemed right at the time.
The Third Eye Foundation		Urchin Snuffed Candles	Another nifty electronica find with some downloadable tracks. Check out Third Eye Foundation‘s page on Eptonic’s site. I picked this to needle Gal Friday because of her marginally successful spay/neuter operation she undertook when last at the family homestead.
[???]	Organ Grooves [???]	The Hen	It’s a leftover from last week’s bed for the groupie bit. I can’t find the bookmark for the page this came from though. I really need to move to something like del.icio.us to tag these finds.
[???]	[???]	[???]	Even worse, all I know about this track is that it is an except from one of those “check your stereo’s performance” albums.
Jimmy Castor	–	Potential	Cheese funksploitation is the heppest!
Diviniation	10% File Under Burroughs	Divination One	Cooling our way out to the end of a set with this nice slice of pie.
The Real Tuesday Weld	–	Bath Time in Clerkenwell	Fantastico! This is such a good and bouny bit of fun. I feel sort of bad that the folks listening live had to hear us speak over the top of this. You get to hear it unmolested.
Plaid	Double Figure	Twin Home	More chill electronics while we catch our breath heading into the three o’clock hour.
[???]	[???]	[???]	All I know about this track is that it is a Laotian singing a Cambodian song while introducing gratuitious yodelling over a funk track. Beyond that, is there really anything else to know?

It’s and oldie, but at least it is something, right? Here’s a rebroadcast of the holiday from November 6, 2005. The show marks my one and only encounter with the National Emergency Broadcast System. Some freak storm came barreling up from Kentucky way and blew the heck out of an otherwise normally freaky Saturday night in Flowertown.
